About Michelle Hains

Employment Prior to College

  • Babysitting for several years, including one brief afternoon caring for six unruly children, and paid $.50 per hour
  • Serving at the Circus Buffet Restaurant, where I nervously spilled coffee on the lap of a customer who graciously pardoned me during my first shift
  • Typing business letters on a manual typewriter, employed by a family friend after completing one semester of high school typing, and laid off after two weeks due to incompetence
  • Dancing the hula with two girlfriends, dressed in grass skirts, bikini tops, and floral headdresses, during a weekend to advertise the opening of a gas station
  • Selling matinee tickets at a movie theatre, studying during the shows while snacking on popcorn, candy, and soda from the concession stand
  • Modeling for fashion shows sponsored by Mass Brothers Department Store in Clearwater, Florida

Biography

Michelle Hains is a respected writer, speaker, educator, and award-winning craft designer. She holds a degree in education from Florida State University. She taught elementary school in Connecticut and Florida, numerous sewing and craft classes, and adult education. Michelle also hosted a local television program.

Publishing credits include Guideposts, Better Homes & Gardens, Angels on Earth, Highlights for Children, Victorian Christmas, Crafts, Crafts ‘n Things, Country Handcrafts, Bridal Ideas, Craftworks, and The Cloth Doll.

Michelle authored 21 booklets and published 275 designs for The McCall Pattern Company, Kwik Sew, McCall’s Creates, Darrow Production Company, and A Country Home. In addition, she was selected as one of three Florida artists to design an ornament for the Official White House Christmas Tree.

Michelle resides in South Florida. She enjoys spending time with family, friends, and two grandchildren, which she calls her “Happy Place,” and writing.
