Turtle and Habitat

Make little turtles from a cardboard egg carton, plus a habitat.

Materials

Cardboard egg carton
Washable paint
Washable marker
Pompom for head (5/8” or 1”)
Small paint brush
Small wiggle eyes
Chenille pipe cleaner for feet.
Tacky glue
Scissors
Heavy plastic shower curtain liner to cover table.

*Make a sample for children to follow.

  1. Cover workspace with shower curtain liner.
  2. To make turtle shell, use scissors to cut one section from bottom of egg carton. Cut away excess cardboard.
  3. Paint turtle shell. Dry thoroughly.
  4. Use marker to make spots on shell.
  5. To make legs, cut pipe cleaner into 4 pieces. Fold each piece in half and twist. Turn up folded edge ½” forming feet.
  6. Use glue to tack legs inside shell, having feet pointing out.
  7. For the head, glue pompom on front of turtle.
  8. Glue wiggle eyes on head.

*Pompoms and wiggle eyes can be purchased in packages of various sizes. The variety packs can be used with many craft projects.

Turtle Habitat

Shoe box lid, other small box, or plastic plate with raised edges
Small rocks, branches, shells, leaves, etc.

Take a nature walk and gather items that occur naturally in a turtle’s habit. Place items in box with turtle.
